    Abstract:

Objective To observe the effect of beddings mate from different materials on the reproduce of SD rats and the growth of their young rats, and to discuss the feasibility of cornstalk as a new kind of laboratory animal bedding. Methods Some parameters of the reproduce of SD rats and the growth of their offspring were detected and analyzed when they were housed on different laboratory animal beddings made from cornstalk, wood shaving and toilet paper. Results There were no statistical differences among three groups in the number of littermates, the total birth weight and the growth of offspring(P>0.05). But there were significant statistical differences (p<0.05)in ablactation rate (the highest in the cornstalk group, reaching 99.79%)and the interval between two litters (31.41 days in the cornstalk group). Conclusions SD rats could keep high reproductive performance when housed on the bedding made from cornstalr, so cornstalk could be used for a new type bedding material for rats.
